Vishwa Gujarati Bhasha Diwas is celebrated on 24th August every year as a tribute to the legendary Gujarati poet Lt. Narmadashankar Dave on his birth anniversary. This day is celebrated as a day dedicated to Gujarati language and literature. Also known as Kavi Narmad, he is the father of modern Gujarati literature. He was an outspoken journalist and pamphleteer and a social reformer, too. He introduced many creative forms of writing to the language.
Gujarati language reflects the rich culture and heritage of Gujarat. It is the 26th most spoken native language in the world. Narmad is a staunch and proud admirer and appreciator of Gujarat and Gujarati language. ‘Jay Jay Garvi Gujarat’ written by Kavi Narmad has been adopted as Gujarat’s state anthem.
The students of Zebar School for Children (Secondary Section) celebrated Vishwa Gujarati Diwas today with a variety of programmes. They honoured the renowned poet by delivering a speech on the life and works of Kavi Narmad and the rich background of Gujarati language and literature followed by a group song based on the glory of Gujarati language. The students performed a short, delightful skit ‘Samjhan’ pertaining to the occasion which was followed by a Kavi Sammelan in which the students presented various poems which brought forth the glory of Gujarati literature. In the end the students dressed up in traditional attire presented Garba with great enthusiasm.
